INEB Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica, Portugal

INEB - Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica is a private non-profit association of the University of Porto with the statute of public interest. The aim of INEB is to provide an interface between academia and the entrepreneurial and health sectors in the areas of Biomedical Engineering. The institute was founded in June 1989 by six institutions, including the University of Porto.

The areas of activity of INEB are Biomaterials and Biomedical Signal and Image. The Biomaterials Laboratory is located at a building shared with the Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular (IBMC), whereas the Signal and Image Laboratory is located at the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP). The existence of two sites permits INEB to have access to advanced engineering and molecular and cell biology facilities.

INEB has a strong link with the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology (IBMC), also a private non-profit institution linked to the University of Porto. In 2000 IBMC/INEB was granted the statute of Associate Laboratory by the Ministry for Science and Technology. In Portugal this statute has been granted to a limited number of institutions among those that have been rated Excellent by international evaluation panels

Semmelweis University, Hungary

Semmelweis University has a more than 200 year old tradition of academic excellence and commitment to the education of physicians and is the only university in Hungary dedicated solely to health science studies from undergraduate to professional level. It is Hungary’s largest health-care institution and one of the most important education centres with a reputation for practically orientated training of surgeons and doctors based on the latest results of scientific research. It offers an exciting mixture of courses and research opportunities closely linked to current health care practice.

The university is proud of its three 3 Nobel-prize winners, Hungarian doctors having studied at the university. The University School of Ph. D. Studies offers over 40 scientific programmes, and more than several hundreds of PhD students have graduated, currently there are 60-70 scholars per year and the same number of free-educational and self-financed Ph.D. students starting their studies. University of Groningen, The Netherlands

The faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen is the second oldest medical faculty in The Netherlands. Like the university, it was established in 1614. Ever since the foundation of the Groningen University Hospital in 1797, hospital and faculty have been cooperating closely. The Faculty of Medical Sciences has two tasks: providing medical scientific education and carrying out medical scientific research. Nowadays the Faculty is part of the University Hospital, or as its is called now University Medical Center (UMCG). Characteristic for the research at the University Medical Center Groningen is the combination of fundamental research and patient-oriented (clinical) research. This so-called translational research is mainly organised around four themes each embedded in one of the Graduate Schools (GUIDE , BCN and NCH ) or in the interfaculty Institute (BMSA).

BioMaDe, The Netherlands

Biomade Technology is an independent research institute, whose mission is to develop and guide promising bio- and nano-technologies forthcoming from academia to viable intellectual property portfolios. Strong collaborations with academic and industrial partners are established to develop marketable applications in various fields with emphasis on bio-organic materials and devices. We aim to contribute to society with innovative problem-solving technologies and products to be commercialized via licenses, spin-outs, etc.

The core business of Biomade is research and development in the area of bionanotechnology. The research projects originate from basic research running at partner universities and are being carried out by our own professional research staff in close conjunction with the university staff. This approach ensures continued and unfettered access to high quality basic research happening in the institutes, and the freedom necessary to focus the projects towards commercialization.

Current research programs at Biomade include mucosal vaccine technology, therapeutic protein stabilization technology, functional nanomaterials for biomedical applications, surface modifying proteins and channel protein technology for diagnostics and drug delivery. The research activities are supported by small but active and well-organized intellectual property department.
